Got a Letter Saying Your Plan Won't Be Offered in 2027? Your Options

A notice that your plan will not be sold next year is not the same as an Annual Notice of Change. You still have choices—but the clock starts when the letter arrives.

If your Medicare Advantage plan sends a letter saying it will not be offered in 2027, your coverage typically continues through the end of 2026. After that date, the plan cannot renew you automatically. You must enroll in different Medicare coverage effective January 1—or earlier if the letter requires action to avoid a gap.

Do not confuse this mailing with the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC), which describes benefit changes for a plan that still expects to operate in your county. A non-offer or termination notice triggers different Medicare rights, including a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) and, in some cases, a path back to Original Medicare with limited Medigap guaranteed-issue protections.

Option 1: Choose another Medicare Advantage plan

Most members who want to stay in Advantage shop during Open Enrollment (October 15–December 7) or use the SEP described in the exit letter. Compare plans on Medicare.gov with your prescriptions and preferred providers. Look for plan-exit banners in Plan Finder so you are not comparing a plan that is also leaving.

Option 2: Return to Original Medicare and add Part D or Medigap

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) plus a stand-alone Part D plan is one route. Another is Original Medicare plus a Medigap policy. Medigap is medically underwritten in many situations—but a plan termination can open a federal guaranteed-issue period for specific Medigap plans if you enroll on time. Dates are strict: generally up to 60 days before coverage ends through 63 days after. Keep your termination letter and confirm details with Medicare or SHIP.

Read our detailed comparison in ANOC vs. non-renewal and Medigap rights and the broader exit checklist in Medicare Advantage plans ending in 2027.

What to do this week

  • Highlight the last day of coverage on the notice and set reminders before that date.
  • Decide Advantage vs. Original Medicare + supplement before you enroll anywhere—switching back can be harder later.
  • Call us before you cancel if you are considering Medigap so we can check guaranteed-issue timing for your state.
  • Enroll in writing (Plan Finder, carrier site, or paper application) and save confirmation.

Extra time after Open Enrollment

Some plan exits qualify you for enrollment after December 7 through an SEP tied to the loss of coverage. Do not rely on extra time without verifying your specific notice. If Open Enrollment ends and you still have not enrolled, call 1-800-MEDICARE immediately to avoid a gap in January.
